Echoes of Dancheong
The design is inspired by the traditional Korean Dancheong patterns, which are intricate decorative coloring found on historic wooden architecture. This design transforms the piano into a musical pavilion for the community. Historically used to protect wooden palace and temple structures from natural elements, these patterns are reimagined here to celebrate the protective and healing power of public music. I often refer to my cultural heritage for inspiration, and consistent with my practice of using Buddhist mandalas and geometric structures in my design, this work utilizes the concept of Obangsaek, a harmony of five traditional colors representing five elements. By wrapping the piano in these rhythmic, vibrant layers, I aim to create an inviting visual harmony that parallels the power of music to heal, offering peace and calm to passerby listeners.
